Final draft

Music Education shouldn’t be cut from schools
Throughout my entire life I have had some kind of music, whether it was taking piano lessons or just listening to music or someone else playing the piano and then playing in the band in 6th grade. Even now while I am here at college I am continuing to have music apart of my life. As far back as I can remember I have had music in my life. Even when I wasn’t playing a musical instrument, I always had my mom and older siblings playing the piano before me.
When I was old enough to I started playing the piano and have played it ever since then. When I entered middle school my 6ht grade year I decided to join band, I started out on the flute. When I entered high school my 9th grade year my band teacher put me on the bass clarinet. I played both my flute and bass clarinet all through my high school years. I also continued talking piano lessons until my teacher had to quite, at that time I decided to take on the challenge, and start to teach others how to play. When I graduated I thought I was done with band and would just play the piano, that was until I signed up for classes here at college. I am now in three different music classes, wind symphony, clarinet choir and flute choir. I plan on continuing having music a part of my life in some way or another even when I am done with school
I have seen many times were schools have cut out the music department. Schools either have to cut the music department out, or get special funding to keep it in and running.
Music should be a basic part of the school day….. Some might then ask us, "If music is basic in school, shouldn’t it be basic in life—before we enter school, after school hours, and into adulthood:" Most of us would answer with a resounding yes!.... That being the case we should ask ourselves whether we are teaching and promoting music as a life skill. ("Music for a Lifetime" 1)
Music education should not be cut from schools when there is a shortage of funds, because music is an important part of our lives, it affects basic brain development and teaches critical skills that are important in our everyday lives. President Ronald Reagan once said:
I have always believed in the definition of an educated man or woman as one who could, if necessary, refound his or her civilization. That means we must teach our students more than just hard facts and floppy disks. We must teach them the rich artistic inheritance of our culture, and an appreciation of how fine music enriches both the student who studies it and the society that produces it…….What we teach in our classrooms today will determine America’s ability to produce capable and compassionate leaders for tomorrow. ("The importance and Necessity of music education" 1)
In the "Parade" magazine June 14, 1998 there was a study done that said "playing music-and even just listening to it-may improve learning, memory, logic and general creativity." ("The importance and Necessity of Music education" 6) When the demands for money forces the school administrators to make decisions of what classes to cut they have to place them. Of course there is a bigger demand for subjects such as math, science, English and history, but what about the other classes like health, computers or physical education, where does music education fit in.("The importance of music education" 1) When it all comes down to the final cut music education is usually the one cut. Here are just a few reasons of why music education is an important part of our lives:
Music makes the day more alive and interesting, which in turn leads to more learning.
Music enriches life, it is a way to understand our culture, heritage as well as other past and present cultures.
It is a major source of joy and achievement.
Music is a therapeutic outlet for human beings.
("The importance of Music Education" 3)
There are many more reasons to why music is an important part of our lives, but were it is also important in our lives in the ways above, but it also affects basic brain development. You have all heard the old familiar saying "all the smart kids are in music," but is this saying really true? It is said that music programs are actually making smarter kids. ("The importance and necessity of music education" 2) There have been many tests done over and over again testing to see if there really is an affect with music on kids. It has been proven each time that music actually affects us. There is continual growing evidence that music education can improve grades, graduation rates and the overall achievement from every student. ("The importance and necessity of music education" 3) Former U.S. Secretary of education Richard W. Riley said:
If we can develop strong music education programs in schools all over our country, good things will happen. Our schools will be stronger. Our students will be smarter. Our nation will be greater. And our lives will be filled with music. What message does it send our students if a modern prison is built right down the road, but their band room has a leaky roof? ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 4)
With music, students are learning all the basics of education. Music is science, mathematical, foreign language, history, physical education, music is all of these things, but mostly music is art. ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 4-5) "The ancient Greeks believed that quality education was built on these pillars: the study of rhetoric and mathematics to develop the mind, gymnastics to develop the body, and music to develop the soul." ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 6)
When a person is learning a musical instrument the brain engages the following systems: sensory and perceptual—auditor, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic; cognitive—symbolic and score reading; planning; motor actions—fine muscle and gross muscle coordination; emotional/motivational; learning; memory; and feedback and evaluation of music produced. This whole process will repeat every few seconds. ("Music and the brain: a broad prospective"2)
Besides music being an important part of our lives and affecting basic brain development music can also teach critical skills that are important in our everyday lives. Just a few of those skills are problem solving skills, self-discipline, self-esteem, teamwork and self-expression. Being involved in music programs can lead to a persons success. A lot of the time it is because of the participation in quality music programs and what they teach: attention to detail, working together for the common good of the group (teamwork), problem solving skills, and pursuit of excellence. If you have these skills you are bound to succeed in anything you do. ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 9)
Music is so much more to me, it is my life. Where I have had music a part of my life for so long it would be weird not to have it in my life anymore. Music education is not just important to me, but every one else in the world. Look at how much one simple subject in school can teach. So why is it the first one to be dropped when school funds are low? Music education is so important in our lives it affects basic brain development and teaches critical skills needed in our everyday lives. Lets all help to keep music education a part of our lives.
