UEA Weekend

Even though I'm not a hunter myself I am very excited for this long weekend. It has been so long since I have last been home and I am looking forward to being able to sleep in my old bed again. This weekend I am going to be taking one of my really good friends here from college home with me and I am hoping to see two of my really good friends from high school. The one friend of mine I don't know what is the deal with him so I left it open for him, if he wants to see me it is up to him to contact me and let me know, but my other friend we became really good friends my senior year and I told her the next time I was down I would go and see her. My friend I am talking home with me is from the city and she hasn't ever done any farm work, since I have a farm I am going to teach her a little about farming life, make her get down and dirty! Since I have to work today I won't be able to go home until around six this evening, but I am still very excited about going home.
I hope that all my plans for this weekend turn out for me, even if my one friend doesn't contact me it will still be tons of fun just being home and besides its his loss if he doesn't come and see me not mine. I just hope that my friend I am taking home with me enjoys her weekend with me and has a good time. I know my home town isn't that big, but it is bigger than Ephraim so there is a little more for us to do. It will be another big change for her since she is from the city. I can't wait to go home and see my family again and some of my old friends.

Music Education shouldn’t be cut from schools
Throughout my entire life I have had some kind of music, whether it was taking piano lessons or just listening to music or someone else playing the piano and then playing in the band in 6th grade. Even now while I am here at college I am continuing to have music apart of my life. As far back as I can remember I have had music in my life. Even when I wasn’t playing a musical instrument, I always had my mom and older siblings playing the piano before me.
When I was old enough to I started playing the piano and have played it ever since then. When I entered middle school my 6ht grade year I decided to join band, I started out on the flute. When I entered high school my 9th grade year my band teacher put me on the bass clarinet. I played both my flute and bass clarinet all through my high school years. I also continued talking piano lessons until my teacher had to quite, at that time I decided to take on the challenge, and start to teach others how to play. When I graduated I thought I was done with band and would just play the piano, that was until I signed up for classes here at college. I am now in three different music classes, wind symphony, clarinet choir and flute choir. I plan on continuing having music a part of my life in some way or another even when I am done with school
I have seen many times were schools have cut out the music department. Schools either have to cut the music department out, or get special funding to keep it in and running.
Music should be a basic part of the school day….. Some might then ask us, "If music is basic in school, shouldn’t it be basic in life—before we enter school, after school hours, and into adulthood:" Most of us would answer with a resounding yes!.... That being the case we should ask ourselves whether we are teaching and promoting music as a life skill. ("Music for a Lifetime" 1)
Music education should not be cut from schools when there is a shortage of funds, because music is an important part of our lives, it affects basic brain development and teaches critical skills that are important in our everyday lives. President Ronald Reagan once said:
I have always believed in the definition of an educated man or woman as one who could, if necessary, refound his or her civilization. That means we must teach our students more than just hard facts and floppy disks. We must teach them the rich artistic inheritance of our culture, and an appreciation of how fine music enriches both the student who studies it and the society that produces it…….What we teach in our classrooms today will determine America’s ability to produce capable and compassionate leaders for tomorrow. ("The importance and Necessity of music education" 1)
In the "Parade" magazine June 14, 1998 there was a study done that said "playing music-and even just listening to it-may improve learning, memory, logic and general creativity." ("The importance and Necessity of Music education" 6) When the demands for money forces the school administrators to make decisions of what classes to cut they have to place them. Of course there is a bigger demand for subjects such as math, science, English and history, but what about the other classes like health, computers or physical education, where does music education fit in.("The importance of music education" 1) When it all comes down to the final cut music education is usually the one cut. Here are just a few reasons of why music education is an important part of our lives:
Music makes the day more alive and interesting, which in turn leads to more learning.
Music enriches life, it is a way to understand our culture, heritage as well as other past and present cultures.
It is a major source of joy and achievement.
Music is a therapeutic outlet for human beings.
("The importance of Music Education" 3)
There are many more reasons to why music is an important part of our lives, but were it is also important in our lives in the ways above, but it also affects basic brain development. You have all heard the old familiar saying "all the smart kids are in music," but is this saying really true? It is said that music programs are actually making smarter kids. ("The importance and necessity of music education" 2) There have been many tests done over and over again testing to see if there really is an affect with music on kids. It has been proven each time that music actually affects us. There is continual growing evidence that music education can improve grades, graduation rates and the overall achievement from every student. ("The importance and necessity of music education" 3) Former U.S. Secretary of education Richard W. Riley said:
If we can develop strong music education programs in schools all over our country, good things will happen. Our schools will be stronger. Our students will be smarter. Our nation will be greater. And our lives will be filled with music. What message does it send our students if a modern prison is built right down the road, but their band room has a leaky roof? ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 4)
With music, students are learning all the basics of education. Music is science, mathematical, foreign language, history, physical education, music is all of these things, but mostly music is art. ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 4-5) "The ancient Greeks believed that quality education was built on these pillars: the study of rhetoric and mathematics to develop the mind, gymnastics to develop the body, and music to develop the soul." ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 6)
When a person is learning a musical instrument the brain engages the following systems: sensory and perceptual—auditor, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic; cognitive—symbolic and score reading; planning; motor actions—fine muscle and gross muscle coordination; emotional/motivational; learning; memory; and feedback and evaluation of music produced. This whole process will repeat every few seconds. ("Music and the brain: a broad prospective"2)
Besides music being an important part of our lives and affecting basic brain development music can also teach critical skills that are important in our everyday lives. Just a few of those skills are problem solving skills, self-discipline, self-esteem, teamwork and self-expression. Being involved in music programs can lead to a persons success. A lot of the time it is because of the participation in quality music programs and what they teach: attention to detail, working together for the common good of the group (teamwork), problem solving skills, and pursuit of excellence. If you have these skills you are bound to succeed in anything you do. ("The importance and Necessity of Music Education" 9)
Music is so much more to me, it is my life. Where I have had music a part of my life for so long it would be weird not to have it in my life anymore. Music education is not just important to me, but every one else in the world. Look at how much one simple subject in school can teach. So why is it the first one to be dropped when school funds are low? Music education is so important in our lives it affects basic brain development and teaches critical skills needed in our everyday lives. Lets all help to keep music education a part of our lives.

College Life

This year for me has been an awesome year. I know it isn't over and I keep writing about how much fun I have been having and it is probably starting to get a little old, but who ever reads my blog is just going to have to get use to me writing about my college experience. Since this is my first year here at college I have been having some very new and exciting experiences. Yes I have had those bad ones I've now had three different run ins with three different guys. I took care of two of the guys and I am still working on the third guy. I have made some of the greatest friends anyone could ever ask for. We have all had a blast together this year so far. Some of us started out as really close friends but as we got to know more about each other we found that some of us were more like another so we tended to become closer with those that we are more alike. Some of us are so different from each other but we just somehow make all of our different personalities come together. I started out really good friends with one girl and as the school year has gone along we have found many differences with each other, but have continued to stay really close, while at the same time I have become even closer with another one of my friends. We have found we are more alike everyday and have become very close. I have enjoyed making all of my many new friends and making all of the different memories I have had. I know that when I leave Snow College will not want to forget all of the good times and of course the bad times because I have learned how to handle those bad times. I am looking forward to many more wonderful experiences here at college.

My Weekend

This last weekend I had so much fun. I was able to go rock climbing for my first time, outside not on a rock wall in gym. It was awesome. At first I was a little nervous, I had only been climbing three times in my life and it was on a rock wall in a gym so this was a completely new experience to me. I strapped on my harness hooked up to the rope and started climbing. At first I kept hitting my head, but I was doing just fine until I got to the hard part, then I had to learn to just trust myself and also just keep telling myself that I can do it. So I kept going at it. I am sad to say I didn't make it to the top, but they all said I did really go for my first time ever climbing out side. Now that I had been climbing outside and know what it is like I think I can do a whole lot better on the rock wall in the gym. So now the next time I get the chance to go rock climbing again outside I will jump at the chance and just trust myself and do it. I know that will determination I can do anything I want. It is just like the saying "where there is a will there is a way."
I still can't believe I have been rock climbing, whoever would have thought that I would be a rock climber? I never thought I would be doing all that I have done so far here at college. I owe all of what I have done with climbing to my really good friends. They are awesome rock climbers and they are always willing to work with me and they help me to get better. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be rock climbing and find out just how much fun it is. Thanks for keep bugging me until I went and for not giving up on me. All of my friends are awesome.

Rock Climbing

This year being my first year of college when club rush week come along I never had any time to go sign up to be in any clubs. I also didn't think I would have time to be in any of them and if I was going to sign up for a club which one would I sign up for? I have a few friends that are big on rock climbing. I had never been rock climbing in my entire life, so they kept trying to talk me into go at least once to just try it. So I finally decided to just go and try it at least once, what can it hurt. So I went and oh man, I loved it. After the first time going I decided I wanted to join the club. I did hurt for the first week, but even though it hurt I went for a second time. I have now been three times and I have been loving it, I'm not very good at it, but with practice I know I can become better at it.
Well this weekend my friends all asked me to go with them and go climbing up to Maple Canyon. We will be doing some night climbing also. So besides actually going and climbing on real rocks I will also be climbing at night for my first time, but hey there is a first for everything. I am excited to be going, but at the same time, I'm a little nervous. I know I'm not good, but the thing with rock climbers they don't treat you like crap if your not any good, they keep working with you and helping you become better. I am glad that I did go and try rock climbing, if it wasn't for my friends that kept bugging me until I went I probably would have never have gone and look at all I would be missing out on. I have decided that when I do leave Snow College, the next college I go to I am going to try to continue climbing.

School 2

This week of school has not been the best for me. I have running around going to classes, studying, doing assignments and also going to work. I have been taking test after test, and assignment after assignment. Besides school work I have also been having a problem with a guy that I can't seem to get rid of that I don't even like. I feel totally uncomfortable and he has practically been stalking me. He has called my friends cell phone over and over again looking for me, stopping by looking for me. I have told him myself I'm not interested and yet he still doesn't get the picture he continues coming by until my friends tell him too. Why can't the guy just get it through his head I'm not interested in him and for him to just leave me alone.
Besides this guy stalking me I have also had a few problems with guys at work. I love to visit and I guess maybe I'm just too friendly. I have attracted a interesting set of guys this year and it was all because I am guessing, I'm too friendly. In some ways I have been harassed and my supervisor told me to not take any of the crap they have been giving me and if I have anymore problems to just let him know and he'll take care of it.
Besides my problems with work and very annoying guys, I wasn't having a very good week also because of all the school work and tests. I was working so hard everyday to be able to keep up in my classes and study for the tests. I am so very glad that today is Friday, I am done with tests for a few days, but now it is on to more assignments to do. School is very challenging at sometimes, but I wouldn't give any of it up, because I am loving every minute of it.

School

For many of us it is our first year of college, so all of this is a big learning experience. But for some of you that are here for their second year they are also having a big learning experience. Many of us are finding out there college has a lot of work attached to it. It isn't all just fun and games. This week is a very busy week for many of us. Were it is midterm the professors are assigning a lot of big projects and having lots of work due, also there are many tests going on this week. The testing center is going to be very full of students this week running in and out taking tests and more tests.
For some of you who are here for their second year pretty much already know what to expect and have already had some college experiences and many learning experiences. But I know for a fact that there are some second year students here that their first year of school they just played around and didn't do a lot of studying so now they are having a learning experiences and realizing that they are in the real world and there isn't anyone here telling they what to do, when to do it. The professors aren't here to babysit.
Yes the freshman are also learning all of this, but some are like the ones last year who aren't doing anything so they will have their wakeup call next year or maybe next semester. I know that I am learning a lot right now. There is a very big change from high school to college. You have to pay very close attention to the due dates of everything and one major thing I have learned is don't procrastinate. Get it done early and then you don't have to worry about it later. Work first, play latter. That is how I've tried to do everything.

Learning

This week I have been learning a lot of new things and some things I probably should have already know. In my wind symphony class I play the bass clarinet and usually we have very easy parts or at least parts that need very little practice. I never really learned how to play a clarinet so everyday I have been learning new things with it. When I was in middle school I played the flute and as soon as I got into high school my band teacher put me on bass clarinet. He never taught me how to play I had to teach myself. Now you understand why I never really learned how to play a clarinet. People don't understand why it is a little more difficult for me to play the one instrument one day and then completely different one the next day. There are a lot of changes that happen between a flute and bass clarinet so I have been working really hard. My wind symphony class is getting ready for a concert next week so we have been working really hard on our songs. I thought I was doing pretty good so I kept practicing the songs I knew we would be playing for the concert and then the beginning of this week I found out that there is two other songs we will be playing for the concert, ones I haven't even practiced. The one song I have some major parts, so I am very important. Some of it has been hard for me to catch on, so thankfully my teacher is kind enough to work with me for two hours this coming Monday so I will be ready for the concert. Today though I had a friend of mine come and help me with different techniques and tips I can use for my instrument. This whole experience with music classes in college has definitely been a good learning experience for me.

Dating 2

As I have asked around to see how girls feel about dating and if they are getting dates, and then I've asked a few guys about dating too to just get the guys side of things. I have found some very interesting information and had some questions asked.
Every girl I have talked to that does not have a boyfriend, they would like that companionship, but it just seems that they can't get the guy to ask them out. Every girl I have talked to have asked guys out and have plenty of times had guys come and flirt with them, so why is it that if the guy flirts with the girl why don't they ask them out. Girls are throwing out hints left and right to let the guy know that they are interested in them. We have just determined that guys are dense or they are just intimidated by all of us.
The guys opinion of dating is very interesting. Some of the guys do notice while some agreed with me that guys are just dense you pretty much have to spell it all out to them, hold up a poster that says ask me out. But there are guys that do get the hint and do ask the girls out. So what happens to the rest of us who are not getting dates?
I have done plenty of asking in my life and I am ready to start getting asked once in a while. Some of the questions girls had about why they aren't getting asked out besides if the guys are dense and don't get the signals. Yes, we do understand that some guys get the signals but just aren't interested. So is it just the girl or is it the guy. What is the guy looking for, how do you get a date, are the girls suppose to be doing all the asking? These are just a few of the questions the girls had.
Right now for me I want that companionship, but I think I would rather be friends with the guy before we become boyfriend/girlfriend. That way if and when we break up it is because we both know it is wrong and we aren't suppose to be together, but we can still be friends. Is there something about girls that scares the guys away from asking us out?
